English Teaching Planning for Young Learner
As a student of the English Education Study Program, teaching English will be a practical task that must done. This teaching practice is also an assignment in the Teaching English for Young Learners course. In this course, students who must taught are young learner, especially kindergarten and elementary school students. Teaching students at this level is difficult. The students are difficult to compromise and respond well to learning. This is because the characteristics of students at this age are very active, therefore they tend to play rather than learn. As a prospective teacher, the use of good English teaching planning is important. Therefore, through this article, we will look at planning for teaching young learner.
This planning is divided into 3 phase: Pre-teaching, During Teaching, Post-teaching.
Pre Teaching
This phase can be called preparation. Because things discussed are related to topic selection, goal setting, activity planning, media selection, and assessment rubrics.
Topic Selection
In determining learning topics for students at this level, the principle of proximity is necessary. In other words, these topics exist and live closely in students' lives. This topic is easy to learn because some students familiar with the lesson content. Examples of topics that are close to students' lives such as body parts, colors, animals, plants, objects at home or school.
Apart from that, students' abilities at this level must be considered in choosing topics. Each student's learning readiness may be different. It is because there are students given a good basic lesson from home and there are those who have not. Therefore, students at this level make more effort to know vocabulary. Learning vocabulary is easy, but it is an important basic lesson for students.
Setting Goals
Learning Goals are designed in line with predetermined topics. The topics determined are adjusted to the students' abilities therefore the learning goals are also adjusted to the students' abilities. Thus, the learning objectives aimed at understanding the learning topic and recognizing vocabulary based on the topic. For example After this lesson is completed, students are expected to be able to know English vocabulary about body parts, colors, animals, plants, objects at home or school.
Preparation of Activities
Activities designed according to student characteristics. Students at this level are so active that sometimes they cannot follow directions well. Therefore the activities really have to look active. Teachers can use songs and games so that students are interested in learning. The songs and games used are educational in nature. In other words, learning is conveyed for students.
Activities also designed according to learning objectives. In learning activities, we use songs and games. The Songs and games can be used to introduce learning topics and vocabulary based on topics. For example, if the teacher teaches body parts, the song used is "My Head, My Shoulder, Knee, Toes" and the game takes pictures of body parts according to the teacher's directions.
Media Selection
Media selection should be adjusted to the activities designed. For example, the game is "Color run" or a game of picking up colored objects according to the teacher's direction. So the media used are balls, paper, pencils or other colorful objects.
The media used must also be real in students' lives. Real learning media allows students to experience concepts or material directly. This can help them understand and remember the information better.
Assessment rubric
English Young Learner development is assessed in 6 aspects. These aspects of development are related to Religion-Moral, Physical-Motoric, Cognitive, Language, Social-Emotional, and Arts. In assessments for English language teaching, it can be assessed from cognitive and language aspects. This assessment is carried out by observing student progress. Students mention and recognize vocabulary in English.
During Teaching
This phase looks at how the teacher executes his planning in teaching and learning activities. This phase is seen from the Opening, Core Activities, and Closing.
Opening
Greetings, praying, and motivating students to study are some of the things that can be done in this Opening activity. After that, you can start by singing 2 songs. Use a song that is closely related to the material to be given. You can then ask students questions about the content of the song. This can create an attraction for students about the material to be taught.
Main Activities
In this activity, educational games should be use. It is because children are more interested in playing. Teacher can start by giving directions about the purpose of this game. The aim of the game must be in accordance with the designed learning objectives. In playing activities, you must be able to observe each child to see whether they can achieve the goal of the game. That way Teacher can carry out an assessment based on the rubric. When all the children have achieved the goal of the game, the game is declared over.
In this activity too, there must be pronunciation practice. The practice must be done repeatedly. It is because students tend to be more receptive. They are a little embarrassed to pronounce the vocabulary, but they can still pay attention well. Later, they can produce the English vocabulary.
Closing
In this activity, the teacher then repeats the lesson or material from the activity carried out. The teacher asks again about the English vocabulary learned and pronounces it together with the students. After that, the next activity is praying to end the learning process.
It is also hoped that teachers should be able to see what problems have occurred in learning activities. Note these problems.
Post teaching
This phase is the phase after the learning is complete. This phase is related to Reflection.
Reflections
This activity aims to look at problems arised from teaching and learning activities. The problems recorded by the teacher are then analyzed. From this analysis the teacher must then create a solution. The solutions will minimize problems so that learning and teaching activities will become well.
This article could be an example for you as a student who wants to become a teacher (especially for Young Learners). You can create your own plan, execution and reflection. But the most important thing is that the Learning Objectives as students' needs can be achieved.
The author also really hopes for suggestions, input and comments to improve future writing. Greetings, author. Kinds Regard. Author.
